Abstract

This paper details a research program I am currently developing to evaluate the importance of prior beliefs and of other heteronomous interests in the production of quantitative public policy research.
The program is based on a triangular model detailing the different types of relations that might exist between a) a researcher’s process, b) a researcher’s results and c) a researcher’s social position. I give examples of how this model applies to various public policy questions. I then turn to the apparently unrelated problem of “reasonable disagreement” in legal doctrine. Despite the apparent distance, there are strong structural parallels between the problem of prior beliefs in quantitative public policy research and the problem of reasonable disagreement in legal doctrine, parallels that make it possible to transpose the triangular model discussed above. I discuss the advantages and limits of such a transposition.
